On the night of 3 July 1999, 19-year-old Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav was tasked with capturing the impregnable Tiger Hill together with the Ghatak Platoon of the 18 Grenadiers Regiment. The Unit was elated after seizing Tololing Hill but also bloodied and bruised.

He was the first member of the Ghatak Platoon to reach the summit, braving harsh terrain, subzero temperatures, and intense enemy fire. Even after being pierced by many bullets and grenade fragments, he assaulted the enemy bunkers and paved the way for the regiment to seize the formidable peaks of Tiger Hill.

During the Kargil War, he demonstrated the most outstanding valour, indomitable gallantry, fortitude, and determination under extraordinarily difficult conditions, which earned him the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honour.

About the Author

Captain (Honorable) Yogendra Singh Yadav (Retired) is the youngest recipient of the Param Vir Chakra in India. He was awarded the nation’s highest military honour for his extraordinary bravery during the Kargil War. Yadav, who had volunteered to clear the way for the Ghatak unit on the treacherous terrain of Tiger Hill, continued to crawl upwards in the face of intensive enemy fire to silence an opposing position.
At the age of sixteen, he enlisted in the Army, despite being from a small hamlet in India. His lowly beginnings opened the door for greater accomplishments with each step he took.
